This is the outside of the Inglewood Unemployment Appeals Board. Unemployment claims filed in greater Los Angeles and parts of the South Bay will land up at this office if there is an appellate hearing. The hearing rooms are set up as tables on each side with the hearing officer facing both sides. The only problem is you have to tilt in order to make eye contact with the hearing officer.
It is important to arrive on time in order to review the record. The judge will read off the exhibits being made part of the record. There might be a lot. It is important to write down a description of each document and its exhibit number.
They validate parking so you only have to pay $3.00.

If you ever wondered what Kaiser did before his name became synonymous with hospitals, here is an example in the San Pedro Harbor. Kaiser was Kaiser steel which built great ships including this supply ship used during World War II.
At any rate, let's just say I have represented a few employees not so happy about their employment at a Kaiser Hospital.

Craft workers taking things from their truck and setting them up for a live theatrical production.
We represent Los Angeles workers of all types, in cases involving many different employment problems. Wrongful termination, unpaid wage, and work injuries are some of the labor problems we get involved in. In my near 24 years representing employees I am not sure there is an industry I have not had a case in.

The Employment Lawyers Group started 2016 with what ended up being a two month binding arbitration victory for lead counsel, Karl Gerber. On behalf of the Plaintiffs Karl Gerber prevailed. The arbitration result led to substantial Private Attorney General (PAGA) penalties. Around the time of the arbitration Counsel, Ann Guleser found herself in a Federal jury trial in Fresno.
On the class action front, one of the Employment Lawyers Group’s class action settlements was approved and fully disbursed. Like many of the firm’s class action settlements this dealt with restricted on-call work, minimum wage, and overtime issues. Two additional class action settlements occurred during the first half of the year. One of these settlements was approved by the court, and the other is ready for a second submission for approval to a complex court.
Construction on the firm’s Oxnard office progressed. When the year started drywall installation in the new construction was not yet complete. At this time construction of Employment Lawyers Group, Oxnard is almost ready for depositions and new client meetings.
Recently, the firm added a new IT person and an additional clerical support person.
As this year draws to a close, Employment Lawyers Group expects to try another two cases. One involves serious sexual harassment and a failure to terminate the harasser notwithstanding multiple women complaining he harassed them at different times. The other trial involves paystubs that did not comply with the California Labor Code and multiple California Labor violations. It is also expected Karl Gerber will spend several weeks in Bakersfield on a multi-plaintiff sexual harassment case.

Do non-traditional educational programs lead to higher paying jobs in the workforce? Do they lead to jobs employees are not able to handle? Do even the better non-traditional programs like the Pepperdine MBA program generally lead to higher paying jobs?
Presently there is a lot of information coming out showing non-traditional educational programs primarily benefit the for profit institutions that offer the programs because their revenues are largely government financing students may never be able to re-pay. While some students may obtain high paying employment as a result of these programs the vast majority do not, and end up with educational debt they will not be able to repay in ten years let alone twenty.

Surprisingly I have had few cases originating from employment at LAX. Either the employers on the premise of LAX, and those servicing it, are of a higher caliber or the employees are too afraid to raise legal issues because they want their jobs.Recently, however, a prevailing wage case occurred partially as a result of a contractor's work at LAX. Some years back I had a significant sexual harassment/rape case against an employer who provided airline food, and another sexual harassment case against an airline.

Santa Monica's largest employer was Douglas Aircraft, for some time. I was researching a claim Douglas built the Aero theater in Santa Monica for his employees. How about that, an employee movie theater. I have been completely unable to verify this claim at all, but in doing so came across quite a bit of information on Douglas Aircraft, some out of my own collection. Enjoy!
P.S. the first deposition, ever, I took was on a McDonnell Douglas whistler blower case. For us Angelenos we all have some sort of personal connection to this former Santa Monica/El Segundo/Long Beach employer.

The Douglas Company, Santa Monica Airport 1940s
For the 75th anniversary of the Aero, for my sister who works for its present owners, I am researching whether they showed movies 24 hours a day for Douglas Aircraft workers there during the 1940s. She does not believe this Santa Monica theater was built in order to show movies to Douglas Aircraft workers 24 hours a day. I am skeptical because it was built before WWII, and it is a bit far from the Clover Airfield (present day site of the Santa Monica Airport) where Douglas had many workers in 1939/1940.
